PROVERBS 5:15-23
Proverbs Chapter 5 verse 15-23 (KJV)
(15) Drink waters out of thine own cistern, and running waters out of thine own well.
(16) Let thy fountains be dispersed abroad, and rivers of waters in the streets.
(17) Let them be only thine own, and not strangers’ with thee.
(18) Let thy fountain be blessed: and rejoice with the wife of thy youth.
(19) Let her be as the loving hind and pleasant roe;
let her breasts satisfy thee at all times;
and be thou ravished always with her love.
(20) And why wilt thou, my son, be ravished with a strange woman,
and embrace the bosom of a stranger?
(21) For the ways of man are before the eyes of the LORD,
and he pondereth all his goings.
(22) His own iniquities shall take the wicked himself,
and he shall be holden with the cords of his sins.
(23) He shall die without instruction;
and in the greatness of his folly he shall go astray.
Summary :
These verses teach about faithfulness, purity, and disciplined love.
Solomon uses the imagery of water, wells, fountains, and rivers to warn against adultery and the dangers of seeking pleasure outside God’s design. He encourages cherishing the “wife of your youth,” being loyal, and guarding the heart from temptations that lead to destruction. God sees everything, and sin itself becomes the chain that binds a person.
MEANING :
1. “Drink from your own cistern” (Verse 15–17)
This metaphor means:
Stay faithful.
Be content with what God has given you.
Cherish your own relationships instead of seeking forbidden ones.
2. “Rejoice with the wife of your youth” (Verse 18–19)
God celebrates sacred, faithful love.
Love within God’s design is:
Pure
Satisfying
A lifelong blessing
God wants love to be joyful, not stolen or hidden.
3. “Why embrace a stranger’s bosom?” (Verse 20)
A warning:
Lust destroys character
Forbidden relationships steal peace
Sin always promises more than it gives.
4. “The ways of man are before the eyes of the LORD” (Verse 21)
Nothing is hidden.
God watches not to punish, but to protect.
5. “Held with the cords of his sin” (Verse 22–23)
Sin itself becomes the rope that suffocates the soul.
Foolishness blinds a person if he doesn’t accept wisdom and correction.
Poetic Reflections :
Love is like a spring that God Himself has placed in you –
it is meant to flow clean, not be polluted by secret desires.
Faithfulness is not just loyalty to a person;
it is loyalty to your own soul.
A heart that chases the forbidden
slowly becomes a prisoner of the very desire it pursued.
But a heart that stays true
drinks the sweetest water God has prepared.
“ The Water That Belongs to Me ”
(Poem inspired by Proverbs 5:15-23)
I drink from the well You gave me, Lord—
a quiet spring,
hidden beneath my everyday life.
The world calls me with rivers
that shine like silver in the night,
but they are only reflections,
never the real thing.
Temptation walks like a stranger
wearing familiar eyes,
yet her steps echo empty halls
where no prayer can live.
So I return to the fountain You blessed—
the love You planted in my heart
before I knew the storms of this world.
Here,
I learn to rejoice in what is mine,
to hold the gift You trusted me with,
to be satisfied by truth,
not illusions.
And when sin tries to bind my feet
with promises of freedom,
I hear Your whisper:
“A man is seen
long before he hides.”
So I walk in Your light -
slowly, honestly - drinking only
from the water
that belongs to me.
